Hiring a Yoga Teacher? Ask These Questions First

A clear checklist of qualifications, experience and warning signs, so you can choose someone you trust.

Choosing a yoga trainer is a personal decision. You'll be trusting this person with your body, your health and often your home. Here's what I'd suggest checking, whoever you decide to learn with.

1. Qualifications and experience

Ask where they trained and how long they've been teaching. A recognised certification shows they know the foundations. Years of real teaching show they can adapt those foundations to different people, which matters just as much.

2. Experience with your specific needs

If you're pregnant, recovering after delivery, managing back pain, PCOD or thyroid, or you're over 60, ask directly: “How many students like me have you taught?” These situations need specific knowledge and care.

3. Do they ask about your health?

A good trainer asks about injuries, surgeries, medications and conditions before the first session, and keeps asking as you progress. If a trainer starts without any questions, that's a warning sign.

4. Do they correct your posture?

Personal yoga is about correct alignment. During your trial, notice whether the trainer watches you closely, explains why a correction matters, and offers easier versions when you need them.

5. Communication and comfort

  • Do they explain clearly, in a language you're comfortable with?
  • Do you feel at ease with them in your home?
  • Would you prefer a female trainer? Many women and expecting mothers do.
  • Are they punctual and reliable?

Red flags to watch for

Be careful if a trainer promises to cure a medical condition, tells you to stop your medicines, pushes you into pain, copies the same routine for everyone, or discourages you from checking with your doctor.

Questions to ask before you start

  1. What is your training and how long have you been teaching?
  2. Have you worked with people with my condition or goal?
  3. How will you plan my sessions?
  4. How do you track progress?
  5. Is there a trial class?
  6. What happens if I need to reschedule?

Always take a trial class

A trial tells you more than any profile. You'll know within one session whether the trainer listens, adapts and makes you feel safe. That's exactly why my first class is free: so you can decide with confidence.
